Everything you say is true but, please, one small word. "only" light of Christianity during the dark ages? Would you exclude the Irish from this honor? If my history serves rightly, Ireland did indeed keep Christianity alive and preserved many of the old books that would otherwise have been lost in the burnings and lootings of Europe when Rome fell.
