For the past twenty-five years Michael Green has carried on a curiously mixed career as wandering monk, artist, writer and craftsman. He has worked as a sign painter, landscaper, a television art director and set designer until he decided to narrow his focus. He prepared a portfolio of mythic/fantasy illustrations and went to visit a Philadelphia publisher. "What kind of work do you do?" they asked. "Tolkienish stuff", he said. "Aha", they said, "we're just now putting together a book we want to call The Tolkien Scrapbook. Want to illustrate it?" The rest, as they say, is history.

The books that Michael illustrated and later wrote and illustrated have been very successful. About 2,000,000 of them are in print including"The Tolkien Scrapbook", "A Hobbit's Journal", "A Hobbit's Travels", "A Walk through the Shire", "Zen and the Art of the Macintosh", "UNICORNIS: On the History and Truth of the Unicorn", "The Book of the Dragonstooth" (Fall 1996) and "The Illuminated Rumi" (Fall 1997).

The illustrations that will appear here are taken from"The Tolkien Scrapbook". We will be posting a new one on the site periodically until the entire collection is available to Tolkien admirers worldwide. We will also be offering color posters of our favorites. If you have a particular favorite, let us know by e-mail and we will consider it for printing.
