Self Portrait

British "Toilet Humour"The nature of the British people is a constant theme within the Dome. This is brought into sharp focus in the Self Portrait area, sponsored by Marks and Spencer. From the marvellous Scarfe sculptures in the centre, to the picture all around the inside of typical British scenes, Britain and its people are celebrated. Around the outside of the spiralling ramp up to the central area are posted examples given by the general public of what is most typically British for them. These range from Morecambe and Wise to Marmite. My overall feeling on leaving this large cylinder was that it told us a great many things which any British person would know already. Apologies to Mr Scarfe, who is a truly great artist, but beside the natural vitality of Shared Ground, this all felt a little too planned and closed.
