Buckland Abbey - Devon

Six miles north of Plymouth (on A386, then take a minor road), the Cistercian Abbey of Buckland, was converted to a private home after the Dissolution by a cousin of Sir Walter Raleigh, and later acquired by Sir Francis Drake. The house contains mementoes of the buccaneering sea captain, including maps, charts, portraits and above all the Drake's Drum, said to warn England of danger from foreign enemies. In the beautiful grounds stands the 14th century Great Barn, of immense proportions.
