Birkenhead
M E R S E Y S I D E Birkenhead was once a quiet little town, but that was before the opening of the John Laird Sons & Company shipyard in 1824. The town grew prosperous building ships and that tradition continues today.

Probably the most famous warship built in Birkenhead is the Confederate raiding ship, "CSS Alabama" which terrorized the Union merchant marine during the American Civil War. Today, at West Float, Dock Road, two British warships can be seen...the HMS Plymouth, a Rothesay class frigate, and HMS Onyx, an Oberon class submarine. Both saw action in the Falklands in 1982.
